The Hacco route departs from the Ruttermarkt for Herstappe, home of the pagan robber chief Hacco. You can hike this trail on its own or combine it with the Evermarus Trail for a decent hike (20 km).
We know Hacco mainly as the man who killed the Frisian pilgrim Evermarus. But that was certainly not his only feat. He was a notorious highwayman who led his own gang. He was a staunch pagan. Anger took hold of him when he learnt that the ‘Christian dogs’ had spent the night in his house. During the Evermarus celebrations, the actor playing Hacco rides on horseback, dressed in a burgundy coat with gilt buttons, and armed with a sabre.
